This week’s Recipe of the Week comes to us from a contestant on “The Great British Bake-Off!”

Hermine’s Smoked Salmon and Chive Soda Bread (with dill and black garlic butter) “wow’d” the judges on the popular show!

We often ask our social media followers to send us photos of what they are making at home with our black garlic. Lately we have been receiving some incredible photos and, if you follow us, then you have seen them on our social media channels (the Packers’ Ham, Cheese and Beer Black Garlic Bread was SUPER popular among Facebook followers). Some of the recipes have even ended up on our Black Garlic Recipes Pages thanks to the home cooks who were willing to share their creations with the black garlic community!

Today was a little bit different because one of our fans didn’t send their own black garlic recipe but rather a recipe by a contestant from the current season of the hit TV show, “The Great British Bake-Off.” Thanks for sending us information about the show and recipe, Kirsten Kay!

Hermine’s Recipe from the most recent episode of The Great British Bake-Off

The series is the fifth most popular all-time food & drink TV show in the UK, according to YouGov.co.uk and it is incredibly popular in the U.S. as well. I have actually seen some episodes of the show (admittedly, I hardly watch shows/movies and don’t own a television) and I believe I remarked that it was nice to see a competition that didn’t select contestants who were dramatic and divisive; a show that didn’t force competitors to despise each other to create “good TV.”

Episode 3 of Series 11 (“Collection 8” on Netflix) celebrates Bread Week, and Hermine, an accountant from London, really impresses the judges with her two soda bread recipes - one of which includes a dill and black garlic butter (drool-worthy!) If you want to see the rare reaction to her savory recipe from one particular judge, you can watch the show on Netflix under Collection 8, Episode 3, though it has been called “Series 11” and will be listed under “The Great British Baking Show” - Not “The Great British Bake-Off” (don’t ask me why the numbers and names are different on Netflix - I went down a confusing Internet rabbit hole seeking answers for our readers, and then ultimately decided not to bore you with the details).

If you’re like me and would rather spend time in the kitchen instead of in front of a TV, then you are in luck! Hermine’s Smoked Salmon and Chive Soda Bread with dill & black garlic butter recipe was recently published to the Bake-Off Website! Just print the recipe, grab some whole bulb black garlic from your favorite brand (Black Garlic North America, of course!), and get to work making this savory soda bread and butter! Oh, and be sure to heed the advice at the top of Hermine’s recipe page:

“Don’t be afraid to use the whole bulb of black garlic to flavour the butter – black garlic is aged regular garlic and is actually very mild and sweet.”
