A Savory Black Garlic Grilled Cheese Sandwich Recipe

I am a big fan of the Grilled Cheese Sandwich. Perhaps this is because I was born in the Dairy State and lived mere blocks away from a cheese factory as a child (shout out to all my fellow Wisconsinites!). Or maybe it is the memory of Mom’s melty grilled cheese sandwiches served with hot tomato soup. Whatever the reason, I love this sandwich, and I am not alone!

In 2019, YouGov surveyed over 1,200 people in the United States, asking them to rank a variety of sandwiches from “really like” to “really dislike” and it may not come as a surprise that the Grilled Cheese Sandwich came out on top! Even if everyone agreed that the Grilled Cheese Sandwich was the best sandwich, we could expect that there would still be debate among fans about the best bread, spread and cheese to use in their melty creations! Sourdough or white? Pickles or tomatoes? Mayo or butter? Muenster or sharp cheddar? I could go on and on, but I would suggest that the best way to enjoy a grilled cheese sandwich is… any way you want! Savory Black Garlic Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Servings: 2 Sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 4 slices bread – sourdough is always a winner!

  • 8 slices Muenster cheese

  • 4 slices tomato

  • 1-2 peeled cloves Black Garlic North America black garlic, mashed

  • ¼ c mayo – we chosen avocado oil mayo, but you can also try olive oil mayo or traditional

Directions

  1. Grab your grill pan and place it on a burner set to medium.

  2. Take two slices of bread. Stack each slice with two slices cheese, two slices tomato, and two more cheese slices.

  3. Top with remaining bread slices.

  4. Make the Black Garlic Mayo:

    1. Take 1 clove black garlic and mash it with a fork.

    2. Stir mashed bits into 1/4c mayo.

  5. Generously spread black garlic mayo on the top bread slice of each sandwich, lay sandwiches mayo-side down in the heated pan. Grill until golden.

  6. Before flipping, spread top side with remaining black garlic mayo. Flip sandwiches and cook reverse side until golden.

  7. Cut in half and serve!
